Application Post

THIS POST IS FOR ARCHIVE PURPOSES ONLY. YOU CAN FIND THE NEW APPLICATION POST HERE.

Applications are currently OPEN.

Interested in applying to Brave New World? Simply fill out the form below and submit it! We do have some rules, though.

-Brave New World is an Alternate Universe game. All canon characters must be crafted specifically into the setting in order to be applied. Additionally, Original Characters may be applied, they too must be specifically crafted to the setting.

-You are permitted to either post the application directly to this page in a comment or to post the application elsewhere (preferably your character's journal) and link it in a comment here.

-Applications may take up to one week to process, and revisions up to three days. We'll do our best to get to them as soon as possible, however.

-If you are asked for revisions, please re-submit them within 72 hours of mod response. If no revisions are received within that period of time, your character will be made available again and someone else may submit an application for them.

-If you are rejected, don't worry, you can always try again! We currently have no limits on how many times a person may apply for a character; however, we do reserve the right to ban a person from apping a certain character if it gets too far out of hand.

-We do not accept application challenges. If you apply for a character that already has been applied for or reserved by somebody else, the other person will receive due consideration first. If they are rejected, their reserve expires, or they fail to re-submit revisions within 72 hours of a mod revision request, then, and only then, will we consider your application.

A Guide to Ease the Process of Applying - Skip if You Feel Prepared
As there is quite a bit of information to get through, we do encourage everyone to read through all the pages in the Directory before applying. However, pages that absolutely need to be read include the following:

Premise: A description of the game, and an introduction to the history of Union (the city in which the characters live) and what it means to be Enlightened.
Rules and FAQ: A basic Q&A addressing game mechanics can be found in the FAQ, including a basic outline concerning Bonding with Pokémon and rules concerning levels and Pokémon attacks, a description of our communication network (Warp Bands), and a description of Enlightened and Enhanced Items.
The City of Union: A post describing the physical locations within the City of Union. New areas may be added by players as they wish.
Society & Culture: A post describing the culture and the social mores of the civilization within Union as well as a listing of important Union-specific professions. You may choose to have your character serve as one of these professions or as another less Pokémon-specific profession like 'waiter' or 'chef'. This post may be of particular importance for crafting a working AU for your character.
The Enlightened: A post describing what it means to be Enlightened as well as Enlightened abilities you may choose for your character and how they affect game mechanics. As a note, any character who does not want to have special skills should choose the skill 'Far from Ordinary', which essentially means they do not have powers.
Training, Bonding, and Leveling: While this post is not essential for reading before the app, the details given on bonding with Pokémon will need to be understood to get the most out of the game.
Starter Pokémon: A list of all the starter Pokémon that may be chosen. Please pick one and note it in your application. Your starter does not have to share one of your character's types.
AU Planning: Before applying, it may be helpful to glance through this post and see if you can make plans with someone to have prior CR or to otherwise plan for future CR. You may also post on our Plotting Comm, which is open to all, to see if anyone would be willing to hash out some AU details with you.
Plot Timeline: As the game has been running now for several months, it may be helpful to glance through to see which events your character would logically have experienced as a citizen of Union before you begin to play them.

Prior to February 3rd, 2014, we asked that anyone who wished to apply a character from outside Union contact us first for approval. However, this no longer requires approval as long as the character is from a small, outside settlement and does not intend to return. If you intend to make use of a large civilization outside of Union, please still do contact us so we can discuss details. We generally prefer characters to come from settlements already established in game. We also ask that you contact us to talk things over if you plan to include any major actions by the NPCs of the city of Union in your application: for example, if you are attempting to app a murderer and you need to talk about how Union would respond to his crime.

Whenever in doubt, please feel free to contact the mods with any questions you may have! If your application includes some detail that conflicts with the established societal norms of Union, we'll respond to let you know. This does not mean your app is unacceptable! We absolutely want to work with everyone to make sure they can get an AU that they can enjoy. At the most extreme end, we can even accommodate things like people who want to work to bring down Union, but again, please do contact us to hash out details.

CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik
Character Canon: Sonic the Hedgehog

History: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Eggman

AU History: As a child, little Ivo always wanted to grow up to be a scientist. He was raised with stories of his grandfather, Dr. Gerald Robotnik. Of course, these stories came more as warnings of the man he should always strive not to be. Gerald Robotnik is an infamous researcher, exiled nearly a century ago for his research. Gerald was pressured by the ever-pressing need to save the life of his granddaughter, Maria, and many still suffering like her. In the ruins of the Old City, he uncovered and restored medical machinery periods beyond the his modern era. He believed he could save Maria, but Union's own limited technology prohibited him from making use of his findings.

Gerald, growing desperate, needed a way to access the old technology, developed in the process a way to utilize the energy of Pokemon. Abundant and plentiful, the different types of Pokemon carried enough energy that, if tapped into, could fuel the old technology without issue. Using remnants of old technology that indeed made use of Pokemon, Gerald submitted his findings to the Council, only to be firmly rejected. Unwilling to accept their decision, he acted independently, taking his research and resuming operations in the Old City. He used Pokemon life to save those of humans.

Union authorities finally confronted him and after a showdown, Gerald was exiled for his grave heresy. Maria was said to have died, unable to be treated. Rumors circulated based on the severity of what Union had found. Rumors went around that Gerald had made an attempt to create Pokemon life from scratch, repeating almost all the sins of legends. The remaining members of the Robotnik clan in the Union lost their prestige and standing, becoming pariahs in the city for a time.

Young Ivo admired his grandfather for his convictions and compassion. He never understood why Gerald had to be exiled, simply for caring about others a little too much. At any rate, these stories inspired a kind of thirst for knowledge in the child, carrying him to excellence with his education. Ivo overcame the stigma of his surname and was looked on by teachers as nothing less than promising... as long as his famously overbearing personality wouldn't get in the way.

Ivo graduated from the Union University and resumed work as a Researcher, focusing on Energy. To those that ever dared ask, he claimed he was trying to atone for his grandfather's sins.. before shooing them away. In the modern world where fuel, hospitals, food, and basic necessities were more in abundance, Ivo's energy research focused more on dealing with theoretical problems like shortage crises. In other words, his was a harmless occupation.

In secrecy, Ivo continued his grandfather's research concerning Pokemon energy. He has drawn up plans for an upgrade to the old Robotnik Engine schematics, an improvement from the crude version that captured the various type-energy of Pokemon. Still burning with ambition to prove his grandfather's work, Ivo works tirelessly in secret for the day where he can demonstrate how important it is not to be afraid of progress. Union, to him, was a city that cowered before progress. He hated it, yet he wanted nothing more than to gain their approval.

As of late, Ivo is a veteran to the Union's scientific community. His infrequent experiences lecturing has earned him the unflattering nickname, Eggman, among students and colleagues, as a jab at a man whose personality comes off, in the nicest words, dictatorial.

Canon Personality: In Mobius (or Earth, because there's really no geographical continuity in the Sonic series), Dr. Eggman is easily the most ambitious man living. Being branded as a global pariah, he always retains the drive to fix up a robotic armada and give war another shot. Defeat has never stopped him. He allows nothing to stand in the way of conquest and doesn't care for a second opinion. A lot of this comes from wanting to prove that he's right. It was the world that rejected and continues to reject his visions and ideals. To conquer the world is to finally prove it wrong for the way it treated him and his grandfather, men of real vision. Eggman's life is absolutely and utterly consumed by this ambition. While he may pause to rest or rebuild, he'll always return to his life work once he's able, and is perfectly fine with putting anybody in harm's way for his own goals.

Eggman has always been arrogant and egotistical, two traits appropriate someone who thinks he's fit to rule over everyone. He knows how to grandstand and put himself up on the spotlight without a single iota of hesitation. As such, he is self-destructive. Despite his losses, Eggman truly believes his machinations to be flawless. It's often because of this that he misses critical flaws in his machinations. In Sonic Colors, at the very beginning of the game, one of his robots triggers the malfunction in his mind-control ray, the weapon he has taken pain-staking efforts to powering. While he's conscious of his long list of defeats, he usually focuses on making bigger and badder machines than analyzing the execution of his plans. He's a stunted man who's too stubborn to assess his own weaknesses, preferring to highlight his strengths to ignore them.

Eggman believes himself to be a feminist, romanticist, and a gentleman most of all, though it's difficult to tell from his brutal ways. There are certain ideas and truths that he holds most valuable. As an example, he respected his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, for the empathy put into his work. In a surprisingly sober moment at the aftermath of the ARK incident, Eggman mulls over how his own grandfather was willing to kill him with the rest of the world. The goodness he attributes to his grandfather motivated him to become a scientist in the first place. It may be true that Eggman values compassion for his fellow beings. There are occasions when he partnered with and saved his enemies, admitting he's a “complicated guy”. Ultimately, Eggman believes that in order to create a better world, extreme measures are necessary. But to nobody's surprise, he's prone to getting lost in his own extreme methods.

To this day, Sonic has always been a part of the force that drives the intricate cogs of Ivo's dreams to a grinding halt. With each bitter failure, the mad scientist has grown progressively obsessed with outdoing the hedgehog. At the same time, Eggman grudgingly admires Sonic. While he doesn't give up in conquering, Sonic never falters in protecting. It's a classic case of “unstoppable object meets immovable force”. It could be said that Sonic has motivated the doctor to find ways to improve himself, whereas he likely would never take pains on his own to analyze his own flaws. At this juncture, defeating Sonic and conquering the world has become one and the same. Eggman needs adversity to grow, so full of himself that otherwise, he would see other no need to improve. He is more reactionary than he would care to admit.

AU Deviation: Eggman is a little more receptive to what he can and can't do in Union culture. He's more prone to playing by the rules, working covertly on his passions and swallowing his pride. As Union is still technologically in development, he can't invest as heavily into robotics, a field that doesn't yet exist. While Eggman may have a fascination for “self-moving dolls”, he deals more with energy and Pokemon, seeing in them the tools to break through man's and his limitations. His desire to rule the world hasn't quite yet surfaced.

As Eggman likely cannot access a mechanical armor of any kind, he would be less inclined to enter the battlefield himself, sticking to a pure commanding role.

Canon Abilities: Eggman's army is constructed primarily of the robots that he has built. He's able to create armadas and armies far beyond the technological level of the world he challenges at an alarming rate. If defeated, he'll always come back in about a few months with a mechanical army just as massive, if not bigger. He always manages to escape, defying capture and death in improbable ways.

Eggman has demonstrated that he has a penchant for developing an almost human AI. Many have betrayed him after having developed their own consciousness while the ones who stuck around, say Orbot and Cubot, can seem strikingly human in mannerisms.

His main vehicle to “get around” is his Egg Mobile, a flying hovercraft in the shape of half a sphere. It serves often times as a “key” to his more terrifying battle robots. If not, it's designed to be perfectly customizable with armaments and tools like grabbing arms, tractor beams, wrecking balls, and the like.

Enlightened Abilities: Far from Ordinary/Engineer. While the Robotnik family has traditionally not seen many enlightened individuals, the line has been made up of above average thinkers and innovators. Eggman's abilities as an Engineer are relatively mundane in that there's nothing supernatural about it.

Starter Pokémon: A Klink named and codenamed “E-K599: Gearworks”, a Magnemite named and codenamed “E-M081: Polaris”, and a Golett named and codenamed “E-G622: Cauldron”.

Notes/Special Considerations: The existence of the Robotnik Engine, later the Eggman Engine, a capsule-shaped machine that drains Pokemon life force, fueling “batteries” out of them. The ones that Gerald had created a century ago were destroyed. No working model exists at the moment, but Eggman has worked out the schematics for an updated version. His updated version would make sure that the capsule stops short of killing the Pokemon; not to say the whole concept still isn't insane. The technology draws on Team Flare's own research into draining Pokemon life force, though naturally, it isn't anywhere close to being capable of draining the power of a Legendary without overloading.

They're based on capsules that regularly appear in Sonic games: http://sonic.wikia.com/wiki/Capsule

SAMPLES

-What does the story of the Savior mean to you?

That wretched myth! Do you realize how damaging that dratted story has been for human civilization? It glorified cowardice in the face of the unknown and thanks to it, we've been dragging our feet in terms of scientific progress since. It's... It's not like we can't prepare for another catastrophe. The point is, we're better off not being told how to live by some absurd tale.

-What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
They should be strong, but first and foremost, they need to do as they're told! Take those fascinating inorganic Pokemon wandering the lands for example. Absolutely fascinating. Just like machines, they're calculating, sleek, and they think of nothing besides getting the job done. They're the pinnacle of loyalty and partnerships are nothing without loyalty.

-What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?

Man's tenacity is second to none. A real man doesn't know the meaning of the words “give up”. Even if he's hit with a freak meteorite from the sky, as long as he draws breath, he'll still keep the trek forward. That's just any old man, of course. An ideal man has a cause! A great cause, one that he puts every fiber of his being to use for. And man has changed the course of this world just with a cause alone.

What isn't there to admire about my fellow man?

-The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity?

Hoohohoh! If I had the honor of representing humanity,I don't think they'll like what they see. And why should I care about their petty judgments?

This world doesn't belong to these divine dunderheads, sitting on high, thinking they own this rock despite having done nothing to care for it like the rest of us. That said, I'm sure they'd be itching for another fight. Which is perfect! I'm pretty certain that capturing just one god can power our cities for over thousands of years. We'll be eating comfortably.

-What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?

If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself. I know that. That's why it's up to me to fix the way things are headed. We can't just keep dragging our feet, cowering at the thought of progress ticking off some invisible monsters. I'll lead by example and show everyone just how far we can go again. I don't know if they'll take too kindly to it at first, but I know that they'll thank me later.

-A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend?

That... well, that's not fair! There has got to be more context than this. I mean, was this person just so horrid that they'd actually just kick around a creature or two for fun of it? Or did this Pokemon, say, steal something valuable and he was trying to get it back? Ugh... I don't know. It'd be easier to reason with the person, so I'll defend him first before getting any answers. I mean, if I cared enough.

--You plunge into the depths of the Old City. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?

This is redundant. They're all one and the same to me. A piece of old tech is a piece of the past, connecting us to the present. Unless we're talking about monetary value, which is just a means to an end in the long run, this is the true form of “treasure”! What's more valuable than reclaiming a piece of lost history, paving way for the future? … That's a rhetorical question. You'll just make me mad if you answer it.

-When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?

I'm not... nearly as intrigued with the nitty-gritty bits of biology that analysts are so keen on. Beyond making a list of the Pokemon's basic strengths, physiology, and characteristics, I'd make pain-staking efforts to bond with it. My, heh, “army” could always use another strong addition.

-You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies, upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?

Eugh, and I can only hope this doesn't actually happen. Well, as long as we're talking theoreticals... My legs. I would rely on my legs to sprint me away from harm's way. I don't like to brag, but I've always been something of a runner. If danger can't catch me, then I'm guaranteed a way back.

-In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable.

… Absolutely unforgivable, hm? It's betrayal, for one. I can't stand being double-crossed and I won't have it. I'll rip out and eat the black hearts of whoever dare thinks they can use me and toss me away, just like that. There's nothing so selfish, so despicable as betraying a person. Union still needs to answer for what it did to my grandfather...
