Application Post

THIS POST IS FOR ARCHIVE PURPOSES ONLY. YOU CAN FIND THE NEW APPLICATION POST HERE.

Applications are currently OPEN.

Interested in applying to Brave New World? Simply fill out the form below and submit it! We do have some rules, though.

-Brave New World is an Alternate Universe game. All canon characters must be crafted specifically into the setting in order to be applied. Additionally, Original Characters may be applied, they too must be specifically crafted to the setting.

-You are permitted to either post the application directly to this page in a comment or to post the application elsewhere (preferably your character's journal) and link it in a comment here.

-Applications may take up to one week to process, and revisions up to three days. We'll do our best to get to them as soon as possible, however.

-If you are asked for revisions, please re-submit them within 72 hours of mod response. If no revisions are received within that period of time, your character will be made available again and someone else may submit an application for them.

-If you are rejected, don't worry, you can always try again! We currently have no limits on how many times a person may apply for a character; however, we do reserve the right to ban a person from apping a certain character if it gets too far out of hand.

-We do not accept application challenges. If you apply for a character that already has been applied for or reserved by somebody else, the other person will receive due consideration first. If they are rejected, their reserve expires, or they fail to re-submit revisions within 72 hours of a mod revision request, then, and only then, will we consider your application.

A Guide to Ease the Process of Applying - Skip if You Feel Prepared
As there is quite a bit of information to get through, we do encourage everyone to read through all the pages in the Directory before applying. However, pages that absolutely need to be read include the following:

Premise: A description of the game, and an introduction to the history of Union (the city in which the characters live) and what it means to be Enlightened.
Rules and FAQ: A basic Q&A addressing game mechanics can be found in the FAQ, including a basic outline concerning Bonding with Pokémon and rules concerning levels and Pokémon attacks, a description of our communication network (Warp Bands), and a description of Enlightened and Enhanced Items.
The City of Union: A post describing the physical locations within the City of Union. New areas may be added by players as they wish.
Society & Culture: A post describing the culture and the social mores of the civilization within Union as well as a listing of important Union-specific professions. You may choose to have your character serve as one of these professions or as another less Pokémon-specific profession like 'waiter' or 'chef'. This post may be of particular importance for crafting a working AU for your character.
The Enlightened: A post describing what it means to be Enlightened as well as Enlightened abilities you may choose for your character and how they affect game mechanics. As a note, any character who does not want to have special skills should choose the skill 'Far from Ordinary', which essentially means they do not have powers.
Training, Bonding, and Leveling: While this post is not essential for reading before the app, the details given on bonding with Pokémon will need to be understood to get the most out of the game.
Starter Pokémon: A list of all the starter Pokémon that may be chosen. Please pick one and note it in your application. Your starter does not have to share one of your character's types.
AU Planning: Before applying, it may be helpful to glance through this post and see if you can make plans with someone to have prior CR or to otherwise plan for future CR. You may also post on our Plotting Comm, which is open to all, to see if anyone would be willing to hash out some AU details with you.
Plot Timeline: As the game has been running now for several months, it may be helpful to glance through to see which events your character would logically have experienced as a citizen of Union before you begin to play them.

Prior to February 3rd, 2014, we asked that anyone who wished to apply a character from outside Union contact us first for approval. However, this no longer requires approval as long as the character is from a small, outside settlement and does not intend to return. If you intend to make use of a large civilization outside of Union, please still do contact us so we can discuss details. We generally prefer characters to come from settlements already established in game. We also ask that you contact us to talk things over if you plan to include any major actions by the NPCs of the city of Union in your application: for example, if you are attempting to app a murderer and you need to talk about how Union would respond to his crime.

Whenever in doubt, please feel free to contact the mods with any questions you may have! If your application includes some detail that conflicts with the established societal norms of Union, we'll respond to let you know. This does not mean your app is unacceptable! We absolutely want to work with everyone to make sure they can get an AU that they can enjoy. At the most extreme end, we can even accommodate things like people who want to work to bring down Union, but again, please do contact us to hash out details.

Thanks. Here's a quick summary of the revision you've asked for:

  • Cynthia will be able to touch most flame unless it's coming directly from a more powerful Enlightened or a Pokémon that aims to hurt her. An example would be if she were to drop a torch and fumble for it, accidentally grabbing the part lit on fire, it wouldn't hurt her. Anything she might be wearing may catch on fire, but her skin itself wouldn't blister. However, if she were attacked, the flame might actually inflict pain upon her. As she grows stronger, her skin will "toughen" like the hide of a dragon.

  • Whenever her skin begins to "harden", it's possible that it will start to look as if it's dried out. In actuality, it'll be more scale-like in nature and able to withstand being hit.

  • At some point, she will have the ability to breath fire. It will likely be a painful evolution as it would involve creating an organ within her she's without right now, but once she has it, she'll be able to do so without being hurt. As a bonus, she can eat spicy food without burning her tongue. Huzzah!

  • Her nails will go stronger and be capable of gripping earth, wood, and possibly harder surfaces as she further evolves. This will be handy if she slips while climbing up or down.

  • She won't enjoy water initially and will be frightened of it due to her Flame type. This may settle down once she discovers she also has the Dragon type within her.

  • Her limbs will strengthen and she'll be able to push herself at greater limits. Running at speeds unnatural for humans is a possibility, but that's much further down the road.

  • She won't be able to ever fly like a Dragon type can, but she may be able to move at high enough speed that she would be able to mimic it (much like a Garchomp).

Hopefully those examples are just fine? I'm not sure if she ever will evolve that far or even further, but it won't be anything too game breaking. I plan to have her follow an evolution closely related to her Garchomp in canon, so the abilities she gain would be similar to her's. The most powerful would likely be "Draco Meter".

Ah yes, the intent was to use Blizzard basically like Shower unless otherwise approved to do otherwise. (Blizzard is used twice, once which is more ... standardized, and once which is absolutely absurd. I'm looking for it generally using it towards the more standard version, since if I ever have excuse to do the supercharged version that way it's also just there.) So thanks, that's actually precisely what I had in mind~ :)

That's fine, but it raises the question of how she found out what a Pretty Cure was. Is it alright to say Pretty Cure from the past are a matter of historical record or legend? Alice's app hints at that, more or less.

Okay, necessary edits have been made. Does that look alright?

Mana Aida, since that's what she'll be referred to in game.

Starting out, his physical attack power here is about the same as any human of his size that keeps themselves in good physical condition... It's just that he happens to be about six foot seven. In general his powers are more geared toward defense.

Initially he can produce barriers that can absorb most of the energy of attacks, albeit for no more than two minutes at a go and requires fairly intense concentration. As he evolves he can use this for longer periods - let's say eight minutes after evolving once and maxing out at around twenty minutes as an estimate - and the need to focus solely on maintaining the shield decreases. While it helps defend against both physical and special attacks, it works best at defending against physical strikes. Maintained special attacks (ex: continuously using Flamethrower on him) tend to break down the shield more quickly the higher in power they are, although consecutive physical strikes also wear away at the shield as well. It's really ineffective against electrical attacks of any sort. It becomes more durable as he evolves The exact nature of this particular power may change a bit depending on if happenings in the game would prompt him to focus more on this, but it should otherwise pretty much follow this pattern. The basic idea is that it should probably remind you of Mew's bubble barrier in The First Movie.

He can grab, lift, and throw objects up to the approximate mass of himself via telekinesis. The distance he's able to throw them is directly proportional to how much force he could put behind it if he were to throw the object the normal way, plus factoring in how aerodynamic the object in question is. While he can lift multiple objects at once, their total mass cannot exceed his own mass. This can be self-directed to allow him to hover for a couple minutes, although the most lift he can really achieve initially is about knee height. The ability to lift objects increases proportional to 1.5 times his body weight, then 2.25 times what he weights, and the amount of force he can put behind it scales proportionately to what he can lift. For the levitation, it scales so that he can progress towards fifteen minute bursts of low-altitude flight at the highest level.

Teleportation is also something he can do, specializing in shorter range and fairly rapidfire teleportation rather than long distance. Initially this means only about 300 feet tops, and generally is far less taxing on him if he teleports to a spot within fifty feet of himself. As long as he has the time to orientate himself to his new position after changing his position in space (the human brain isn't designed to immediately know exactly where the body is when it's suddenly displaced without any points in between the here and there, so even with training this will take a few seconds), he can pretty much teleport immediately afterwards. The total distance he can go upon evolution is upped to 1000 ft, then 2000 ft. Theoretically he could train himself to be able to go farther in a single go rather than train himself for a series of hops, but his logic is that it's generally a better idea to be able to get a visual on where he's going since it reduces the likelihood of doing something like teleporting partially inside an object or living being.

He can read people/pokemon's surface thoughts if he devotes a sizable portion of his attention to it, and if he devotes almost all of his effort, he can pinpoint where a specific individual is within a certain range. The range starts at around a quarter mile, then expands to half a mile, and maxes out at about a mile. Depending on how events in the game go, I may have some additions that would likely need to be discussed with mods beforehand, but as things are not likely to go that direction this is just a "just in case" clause.

Lastly, he has one water attack that's basically equivalent to Water Pulse. Water Pulse will eventually work its way up to Surf, then finally to roughly mimicking this spell. This works pretty much exactly like in the games, although it's effectiveness depends on how much moisture is in the surrounding environment, i.e. if he's near a body of water or it's raining is when it'll be when these attacks are at their most effective, and if he's in a fairly dry environment his attack will be decreased.
