For something like this, we would ask that he be a psychic-type. There are potentially other typings that could do it in very specific circumstances. Ground or rock, for instance, might be able to detect precious minerals (but not people and objects specifically); or a normal type could use a heightened sense of smell (although this one might be a bit of a stretch).
