Application Post

THIS POST IS FOR ARCHIVE PURPOSES ONLY. YOU CAN FIND THE NEW APPLICATION POST HERE.

Applications are currently OPEN.

Interested in applying to Brave New World? Simply fill out the form below and submit it! We do have some rules, though.

-Brave New World is an Alternate Universe game. All canon characters must be crafted specifically into the setting in order to be applied. Additionally, Original Characters may be applied, they too must be specifically crafted to the setting.

-You are permitted to either post the application directly to this page in a comment or to post the application elsewhere (preferably your character's journal) and link it in a comment here.

-Applications may take up to one week to process, and revisions up to three days. We'll do our best to get to them as soon as possible, however.

-If you are asked for revisions, please re-submit them within 72 hours of mod response. If no revisions are received within that period of time, your character will be made available again and someone else may submit an application for them.

-If you are rejected, don't worry, you can always try again! We currently have no limits on how many times a person may apply for a character; however, we do reserve the right to ban a person from apping a certain character if it gets too far out of hand.

-We do not accept application challenges. If you apply for a character that already has been applied for or reserved by somebody else, the other person will receive due consideration first. If they are rejected, their reserve expires, or they fail to re-submit revisions within 72 hours of a mod revision request, then, and only then, will we consider your application.

A Guide to Ease the Process of Applying - Skip if You Feel Prepared
As there is quite a bit of information to get through, we do encourage everyone to read through all the pages in the Directory before applying. However, pages that absolutely need to be read include the following:

Premise: A description of the game, and an introduction to the history of Union (the city in which the characters live) and what it means to be Enlightened.
Rules and FAQ: A basic Q&A addressing game mechanics can be found in the FAQ, including a basic outline concerning Bonding with Pokémon and rules concerning levels and Pokémon attacks, a description of our communication network (Warp Bands), and a description of Enlightened and Enhanced Items.
The City of Union: A post describing the physical locations within the City of Union. New areas may be added by players as they wish.
Society & Culture: A post describing the culture and the social mores of the civilization within Union as well as a listing of important Union-specific professions. You may choose to have your character serve as one of these professions or as another less Pokémon-specific profession like 'waiter' or 'chef'. This post may be of particular importance for crafting a working AU for your character.
The Enlightened: A post describing what it means to be Enlightened as well as Enlightened abilities you may choose for your character and how they affect game mechanics. As a note, any character who does not want to have special skills should choose the skill 'Far from Ordinary', which essentially means they do not have powers.
Training, Bonding, and Leveling: While this post is not essential for reading before the app, the details given on bonding with Pokémon will need to be understood to get the most out of the game.
Starter Pokémon: A list of all the starter Pokémon that may be chosen. Please pick one and note it in your application. Your starter does not have to share one of your character's types.
AU Planning: Before applying, it may be helpful to glance through this post and see if you can make plans with someone to have prior CR or to otherwise plan for future CR. You may also post on our Plotting Comm, which is open to all, to see if anyone would be willing to hash out some AU details with you.
Plot Timeline: As the game has been running now for several months, it may be helpful to glance through to see which events your character would logically have experienced as a citizen of Union before you begin to play them.

Prior to February 3rd, 2014, we asked that anyone who wished to apply a character from outside Union contact us first for approval. However, this no longer requires approval as long as the character is from a small, outside settlement and does not intend to return. If you intend to make use of a large civilization outside of Union, please still do contact us so we can discuss details. We generally prefer characters to come from settlements already established in game. We also ask that you contact us to talk things over if you plan to include any major actions by the NPCs of the city of Union in your application: for example, if you are attempting to app a murderer and you need to talk about how Union would respond to his crime.

Whenever in doubt, please feel free to contact the mods with any questions you may have! If your application includes some detail that conflicts with the established societal norms of Union, we'll respond to let you know. This does not mean your app is unacceptable! We absolutely want to work with everyone to make sure they can get an AU that they can enjoy. At the most extreme end, we can even accommodate things like people who want to work to bring down Union, but again, please do contact us to hash out details.

To submit an application, fill out the form below and submit it:

CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Apollo
Character Canon: Genesis of Aquarion OVA

History: Wiki link. Only the OVA section applies here.

AU History: Apollo was born with his Child of the Verdant Forest ability active; he may even have had it while in the womb. It took a while for those around him to understand what was going on, why he would suddenly laugh or cry for no apparent reason, and why Pokémon walking past would frequently stop and watch him with heads tilted as if trying to understand him. His parents (who weren't Enlightened themselves) sadly did not get to see how he would use his gift, as they both died in an accident when he was two. Apollo was put into the care of his only living relative, his maternal grandfather, a Ranger. This was by no means ideal, considering how often his grandfather needed to be away from the city, but his grandfather made it work as best he could. The two of them quickly became quite close, his grandfather spending as much time as possible with him and teaching Apollo everything he could about Pokémon and the wilderness outside the city. Combined with Apollo's ability to communicate with Pokémon and thus learn from them as well, his knowledge and love of the natural world grew exceptionally fast, as did his desire to see it firsthand. Several instances of him stealthily following his grandfather out of the city followed, and despite the discomfort of most of the Rangers his grandfather started bringing him along on "safer" missions, recognizing that Apollo handled himself well and frankly not caring that much about other people's opinions on how he should be raising his grandson. Apollo's schooling has naturally suffered from all this. Lately however his grandfather's age has been beginning to catch up with him, and they're both facing the knowledge that Grandpa won't be able to continue being a Ranger forever. Apollo's begun to head out of the city on his own lately, and while a 13-year-old running around the wilderness on his own makes many people rather uncomfortable, no one who's spent time with him beyond the city walls can deny his competence, and they fully expect that he'll be able to suceed his grandfather with ease. They'd just prefer that he waited until he was a bit older, or that his grandfather wouldn't be quite so okay with it.

Canon Personality: Most of Apollo's views on life stem from something his grandfather always told him: "Be it grass, fruit, or beasts, whatever you eat, you have to live its part. Don't waste a thing." Apollo has made this concept one of the cornerstones of his life. He considers all the animals in the forest, even the insects, his friends, but he knows that he'll be forced to kill many of them so he can survive, and he accepts that, keeping their skulls on the hill around his grandfather's grave to help him remember each of them and how they died. He considers all of the animals he eats to live on inside him and respects their sacrifice, making a prayer-like gesture that he says makes him feel like he can live for his prey before he eats, clasping his hands together and bowing his head for a few moments. Unknown to him, this is a latent memory of his past life, where the right hand represents the life being taken and the left hand represents his own life, the two hands coming together in the shape of a human heart. Even though he kills his animal friends to survive, he hates seeing them scared or suffering, and if he comes across an animal who's injured beyond what he can treat, he'll kill it himself to end its pain.

Anyone who mistreats nature and doesn't respect it like he does - in his experience prior to meeting Silvia and Reika, all humans other than himself and his grandfather - is hated by him. The wish that his grandfather left him when he died was for Apollo to protect the forest, and this wish is the other cornerstone of his life. He tries his best to fulfill that wish, even killing animals that are unbalancing the ecosystem, such as a deer that ate so much that he was worried it would strip the mountain if he left it alone. The biggest threats to the forest though are humans, which he's not nearly as successful at dealing with, since all he has is a hunting knife and poachers are coming with guns, or giant robots are crushing the forest as they fight. Being helpless in the face of a threat to the forest or his friends is something that he finds extremely distressing, and a large-scale threat that he can't do anything about, such as a forest fire, will cause him to panic completely. Apollo's focus on protecting the forest blinds him to the realities of the rest of the world, and part of his development over his canon involves him realizing that he needs to help protect the entire Earth, not just the one tiny patch of it that is his forest. Part of his poor opinion of humans is from negative experiences with them, but part is also from a mistaken assumption on his part; he assumes that all humans are like him and can communicate with plants and animals, meaning they must understand the suffering they're causing and so their destruction of nature is malicious. He's genuinely surprised when he learns that this isn't the case, but immediately understands that that's why they can harm nature so easily. This also leads into another trait of his, that once he realizes that someone doesn't understand something, even if he doesn't like them he'll still explain the truth to them.

In general, Apollo is fairly calm unless you insult him or try to hurt him or someone or something he cares about. Being around humans will also put him in a bad mood, though that will eventually change once he knows them. He enjoys talking about his animal friends with people who will listen, and he's perfectly capable of making jokes, though it's not necessarily clear that he's joking, such as when he feeds his prisoners and says it's a good idea to fatten up your prey before you eat them, only to be offended when they take him seriously. Most of the time he's quite honest and open, the most notable exception being his failed attempt to deny his fear of needles. If he cares about someone, he'll instinctively rush to help them without thinking of his own safety, limitations, or other people's opinions, which can upset others or get him in over his head if he's not stopped. He behaved this way even in the face of a situation as completely beyond him as a forest fire, where he had to be held back from rushing in to try and save the animals.

Beyond protecting the forest he has no real long-term goals, so he kind of drifts through life and lives day-to-day rather than striving towards anything in particular. He'd have been perfectly content with dividing his time between hunting, swimming, and just spending time in the forest until the day he died if the plot hadn't come in and jolted him out of his normal life. Even the idea of dying doesn't seem to scare him, though he would probably prefer to become food for some predator that beat him in a fight than die by a poacher's gun. He isn't particularly introspective and doesn't have much interest in why things happen, only that they do; when asked about the ruins in the lake, he responded that his grandfather had said that they were an important place once, but now they were just a good place for fish, and he doesn't seem to see why Silvia and Reika are so focused on which people made them. He doesn't seem to have much experience with long-term planning in general, as him taking Silvia and Reika prisoner doesn't seem to be done with any great purpose in mind and he isn't even upset when they escape, though that could be because he knows they won't be able to leave the forest without him to guide them.

Despite his minimal contact with other humans he displays no difficulties in holding conversations with them, presumably because his grandfather spoke with him a lot. As long as he's not getting worked up about anything, his body language is fairly subdued. His gestures become wider and more violent when he's angry or desperate, but otherwise even something like him nodding his head isn't likely to be noticed, if it happens at all. What he does have trouble with (though he sees little that's problematic about it) is social customs and knowledge of civilization, failing to understand Silvia and Reika's reactions to him coming out of the lake completely naked and inviting them to join him.

AU Deviation: Since Apollo hasn't been living alone in the wilderness his opinions and knowledge of humans have changed. He places humans and Pokémon on equal footing, though he finds humans mildly irritating at times due to their tendency to not say what they mean; being able to essentially read the minds of Pokémon has set a high standard for honesty. He does prefer the wilderness to the city, but that's because he feels a stronger connection to nature there, not because he has a burning hatred for civilization. While he's now aware of social customs, he doesn't see the point in all of them; he was exposed to the Pokémon viewpoint of human behavior through his power before he had the human viewpoint explained to him, and as such he internalized many of the Pokémon views first, such as the strangeness of humans wearing so much clothing in hot weather and their apparent obsession with keeping their feet covered. He knows that he needs to follow the rules of society while he's with other people in the city, but once he's on his own or in the wilderness he'll follow his own instincts, beginning with going barefoot so that he can feel the ground and keep more precise control of him balance and movements. Since his grandfather is still alive the dying wish to protect the forest is gone, replaced by the internalization of his grandfather's goals as a Ranger: to protect the city and ensure that humans and Pokémon live in harmony. This also gives him a goal in life, something that he didn't initially have in canon. He knows that not everyone can communicate with Pokémon, but it's so natural to him that he occasionally forgets and does things like suggest to someone that they talk to a particular Pidgey for directions. Despite the greater intelligence of Pokémon compared to Earth animals, Apollo still has the same opinions about eating them, and will still not waste their lives.

Canon Abilities: In the realm of mundane abilities, Apollo is fast, agile, strong enough to stop a charging boar (albeit a mortally wounded one), and exceptionally athletic. He could essentially be considered to function at the peak of physical fitness for a 13-year-old boy, unsurprising considering the life he leads. He's extremely stealthy and an excellent hunter and stalker, hunting with a large knife instead of any kind of ranged weapon. His wilderness survival skills and situational awareness are also excellent, again unsurprising considering the life he leads. His sense of smell is excellent as well, to the point that he can tell the difference between grass and flowers on the wind, but this also makes being around civilization uncomfortable for him because of all the chemical smells.

In the realm of the supernatural, he has the ability to communicate with plants and animals. The details of this are never properly explained, but the fact that he listens to stories from a particular tree indicates that this ability is well beyond just understanding the cries of animals. He proved able to summon the Vector Machines from the ruins that they had been hidden in and control Vector Sol without being in the cockpit. Once he entered the cockpit and began to awaken he demonstrated the ability to use telekinesis, putting out a forest fire by throwing a lake on it. When he fully awakened he materialized wings and powered-up Aquarion by drawing on the energy within the Earth. It's implied that his true ability is to channel the power of the Earth itself and through that to create any effect that he wants, but this isn't elaborated on and after that point it becomes unclear which of the later supernatural occurrences are caused by Apollo and which are caused by other sources.

Apollo is also one of the pilots of Mechanical Angel Aquarion, a giant robot formed by combining the three fighter jet-like Vector Machines, Vector Sol, Vector Luna, and Vector Mars. The three Vector Machines can be combined in three different ways, resulting in three different forms that Aquarion can take, each of which is named after whichever Vector Machine is used as Aquarion's head: Solar Aquarion, Aquarion Luna, and Aquarion Mars. All versions of Aquarion amplify the pilots' abilities and senses to absurd levels; the first time that it's activated, it allows its pilots to hear the footsteps of ants, then shows them the entire planet and all human suffering. As Apollo exclusively pilots Vector Sol, only Solar Aquarion's abilities will be discussed further. Solar Aquarion is capable of materializing a flaming sword, but its most memorable ability, triggered by Apollo, is the Mugen Punch (Infinity Punch), which extends Aquarion's arm to punch the enemy no matter where it tries to run. The Mugen Punch can literally punch an enemy into the surface of the moon, leaving little reason to doubt that its range is indeed infinite. When Apollo fully awakens, Aquarion materializes the Wings of the Sun and becomes able to create a god, freeze the entire Earth, restart the planet's life processes, and cause changes in parallel universes. As the series name implies, Aquarion's true ability is to begin the world, regardless of whether or not it is already in a functional state.

Enlightened Abilities: Fire/Flying, Child of the Verdant Forest

Apollo will begin with his mundane abilities as well as the abilities he displays early in canon converted to equivalent Pokémon moves, such as Acrobatics, Agility, and Quick Attack to emphasize his speed and agility, as well as moves that are thematically fitting, such as Natural Gift to represent his connection with nature. Prior to evolving he will learn more of the same, and his ability to communicate with plants and animals will be mostly covered by his Child of the Verdant Forest abilities. At this point his amber eyes and slightly higher than normal body temperature will be the only Enlightened physical traits that he will display.

His first evolution will move him into the abilities he displayed after he first summoned Aquarion, as well as Aquarion's initial powers, again converted to equivalent Pokémon moves, such as Telekinesis, Surf, Fly, Sacred Sword, and Sky Uppercut. At this point, when he gets angry his eyes will flash red and a weak aura of flames will appear around him, but the flames will not damage the natural environment or people and objects he's touching unless he wants them to. This could effectively be considered the Flame Body ability with an on/off switch.

His second evolution will move him into the powers and events shown after he and Aquarion fully awakened, converted to equivalent Pokémon moves to limit their game-breaking nature, such as Sunny Day, Earth Power, Cosmic Power, Land's Wrath, Oblivion Wing, Freeze-Dry, Sheer Cold, and Heal Pulse. At this point his eyes will glow red when he's feeling intense emotion and the aura of flames becomes a pair of angelic wings made of contained fire that appear whenever he uses Fly or feels intense emotion.

Notes/Special Considerations: Apollo is the reincarnation of a Talonflame who sided with humanity during the war without ever seeing the inside of a Pokéball, falling in love with a human woman and fighting by her side against his fellow Pokémon, including many of his friends, who came to curse his name. He was strong and defeated many Pokémon who threatened humanity, but wasn't invincible and fell in battle moments before the Savior had her fateful meeting with the gods. As he died, he wished that if he could be reborn it would be as a human to be with his beloved.

Apollo has no conscious memories of his past life. If he were to remember anything it would likely be triggered through encountering something from his past life or coming in contact with the reincarnation of someone he knew in his past life. Knowledge of the Talonflame he once was exists in Union in books and stories, but it isn't commonly known, being overshadowed by the story of the Savior.

SAMPLES

First-Person: [Audio]

Spring is always a nice time of the year. Everyone starts to grow again and come out of their homes now that the snow is melting. It feels like the world is coming alive again.

I know that a lot of you are excited to head out and explore again now that it's easier to travel. Just remember that you're not the only people out there. Five Ursaring spent the winter within a day's travel of Union, and they all have at least one child with them. Teddiursa are cute, but don't get close to them, especially if they look like they're alone. Their mothers don't like anyone near their children and they will attack you if they think that you might be a threat. The Ursaring spending the winter this close to Union shows that they're starting to trust us. [His voice becomes noticeably more serious.] Don't give them a reason not to.

Third-Person: Apollo leapt from branch to branch, bare feet coming in contact with the bark for only an instant before pushing off, possibly the most impressive-looking non-combat use for Acrobatics he knew. He had come out this far on the rumors he had heard from the wild Pokémon, of a newcomer to the area whose species the local Pokémon didn't recognize. A previously unknown species would interest the researchers in Union, but more importantly it was a chance for people, both human and Pokémon, to connect with each other; the humans would learn about a new group of potential allies in the wilderness and the best way to interact with them, while the newcomer Pokémon would (hopefully) come back with him and interact with humans, eventually going back to the rest of their species and be able to pass on the knowledge that there was no need to fear humans any more than they would any other Pokémon.

The problem though was that he had just heard from one of the Pokémon nearby that the newcomer had stumbled into the territory of an Aggron and had come under attack, hence Apollo not taking the scenic route like he normally would. He could hear the sounds of battle ahead and leapt from the canopy to land between the two Pokémon in a crouch, "yelling" the concept of stopping into both their minds. The Aggron was startled enough to hesitate; if she hadn't Apollo would have been severely injured or killed. The unknown Pokémon, a brown and tan quadruped with a gold and red mane, was only too happy to stop, but was already too injured to do anything more than try and slowly hobble away, its pain flowing into Apollo's mind. Apollo grasped the brief window that was open and projected the idea of calming down into the Aggron's mind. The Aggron roared angrily and Apollo got her sense of having her territory violated blasted into his mind through their link. Apollo could tell that she wasn't intelligent enough to reason with in anything more than the simplest terms. He would have to establish enough dominance with her to force her off, something that being almost two feet shorter than her made a challenge. Most trainers, he knew, would simply transport in a Pokémon to fight for them, escalating the situation further and likely leading to a battle to the death with how the Aggron was acting. In most situations Apollo would consider that an unpleasant but still valid option, but there was a problem here; if he killed the Aggron he wouldn't be able to use the body for anything. There was no meat to be had, no bones to take back to city for fertilizer, just a heavy load of metal and stone that he wouldn't be able to take back with him. There was no way that he was going to waste a life he took. He had to take another path, even if that meant letting the unknown Pokémon die and making use of its body once the Aggron had left.

He slowly backed away while projecting calmness at her. He had seen a flash of pink within bluish leaves as he was dropping down, and he made his way over to it as fast as he could without making any sudden movements. He felt the Aggron's miniscule patience end just as he reached the plant, and as she charged he plucked a berry and flung it in her path, using Natural Gift to charge it with energy. The Persim Berry hit the ground and burst into a clump of sharp spikes. The Aggron frantically skid to a stop, instinctively avoiding the super-effective Ground-type effect. Apollo gripped another berry in his fingers without picking it and projected the idea that any further berries he threw would be aimed at her if she didn't leave, followed by a promise that both he and the unknown Pokémon would leave after she did. The Aggron hesitated and Apollo tensed his arm as if he were about to pluck the berry and throw it, once again projecting the promise that they would both leave the Aggron's territory once she was gone. The Aggron decided not to find out how strong a Ground-type move from Apollo would be if it actually hit her and left.

With that crisis averted for the moment, he turned and ran over to the unknown Pokémon, crouching next to it - him Apollo understood now that he was focused on the Pokémon - and placing one hand on him. The Pokémon's pain dulled as Apollo put part of his life into the Pokémon's body while he examined the wounds. Nothing seemed to be broken or dislocated, meaning that he wouldn't have to try and make a splint to keep everything in place while it healed. Projecting reassurance into the Pokémon's mind, he placed both hands on the largest wounds, closed his eyes, and focused. The Sentret who he had killed and eaten for dinner the night before, her bones wrapped in her pelt and placed in his bag, the bones to fertilize the agricultural tower and the hide to make things with. The berries that he had collected and eaten that morning as he had walked. The berry that he had sacrificed to use Natural Gift. Their lives had ended so that his could continue, and they lived on through him. Now, through their sacrifice, he was here to ensure that this Pokémon before him would see tomorrow. He silently thanked them as the part of his life that they had provided for left him and passed into the Pokémon before him, stemming blood flow, closing wounds, and removing pain.

Apollo was breathing heavily by the time he was done; healing such large wounds took a lot out of him. The Pokémon's feelings of gratitude came into his mind and he smiled, then mentally asked if the Pokémon would be interested in coming back to the city with him; there were people there who would like to meet him and learn about his species, he wouldn't have to worry about finding food or avoiding predators, and obviously he would be free to leave whenever he wanted. Apollo could feel the Pokémon debating internally for a moment before agreeing. He stood and mentally told the Pokémon that it would be a long trip back to the city, but they could travel together and keep each other company on the way. The Pokémon agreed that that would be a good thing and got to his feet, telling Apollo to lead the way. Together, the two of them began the trek back to Union.

Fixed the App a bit to reflect the comment and adjusted the AU change! Let me know if you need more than this:

AU Deviation:
He'll put the same story telling and naming fantasies to work with his and other people's Pokemon. He is going to be highly disappointed with those who don't give their Pokemon unique names. For Brave New World he is going to focus more on the bond between Enlightened and Pokemon than Warrior and Weapon. With the great war behind them, they are going to have to work together to form this new world and it is going to take the best of both parties to do this if they intend to live together. He's also going to see the bond as a step in the right direction towards one day reclaiming the world.

He still blames himself a bit for his father's death and his inability to be there to save his mother.

Since this is retaking the world rather than living in a world on the brink of death, Owain is going to lack a few of the childish traits he has in his home canon. There, he grew up in a world without the chance to be a real child and seems to act childish around his mother in particular when he goes back in time. Here, he does not have that. He's the adult now, and while his stories may be fanciful, he still sees himself as a more independent individual.

Great, thanks!! I'll work on getting to that... Is the Intensive Search usable later, or will that be happening the first week?

As far as changes go, I've spoken with Marco's player about him being a ghost-type or the like, but I believe her app is still in the works, and I don't wanna push anything, so I've cut Marco out of Jean's AU for the most part.

Simply put, Marco would have been Jean's only friend throughout school (as Jean would insist Eren doesn't count,) so the main differences would be things like, "he was a loner, save for his best friend Marco, who often encouraged him to pursue his dreams..." etc. (Without Marco, I was just going to assume Jean was friends with some Pokemon who lived in his house, that sort of thing.) Depending on whether Marco is apped and "dies" (or whatever equivalent thing happens, if it happens or doesn't happen) Jean's reasons for wanting to eventually switch to the Rangers would change. Without Marco, he would likely join at Eren's insistence, more to prove to others that he's not weak-- still very much with a chip on his shoulders; whereas with Marco in the picture, he'd likely do it with Marco's coaxing, as he values his opinion a lot. (Marco could give him that "you're a good leader because you're so weak" speech, but Jean would claim Marco had nothing to do with it.)

...does that make sense?
